Основатели группы — вокалистка Эми Ли и гитарист Бен Муди  — уроженцы маленького городка Литл Рок, штат Арканзас, США. Они познакомились в летнем лагере христианской молодёжи в 1993году, когда им было по 13 и 14 лет соответственно. По воспоминаниям Бена Муди, он обратил внимание на Эми, когда она играла песню Meat Loaf  — I Would Do Anything for Love на фортепиано. Муди: Несколько лет назад Эми и я были в одном молодёжном лагере. Я играл с группой культовой музыки, а Эми была участником богослужений на открытом воздухе. Как-то в свободное время я сидел в спортзале и смотрел баскетбольный матч. На другой стороне площадки имелась сцена, на которой стояло пианино. Я сидел и просто умирал со скуки, когда вдруг до моих ушей донеслись звуки пианино, игравшего вступление к «I Would Do Anything for Love» группы Meat Loaf. Я посмотрел в ту сторону и увидел за пианино девушку, которая играла совершенно без усилий, непринужденно демонстрируя огромный талант. Когда поднявшаяся во мне волна зависти улеглась, я вскочил на ноги и побежал к пианино прямо через площадку, на которой шла игра, и представился девушке. Затем она потрясла меня ещё больше песней, которую она написала. Мне почудилось, что я в раю. Затем она запела.

Я чуть не умер. У этого маленького, худенького изгоя из молодёжного лагеря был один из самых сильных и красивых голосов, какие мне доводилось слышать. Каким-то образом мне удалось уговорить её никогда больше не играть с кем-либо ещё, и с тех пор она стала моей. Ли: О чем ты говоришь?! Я никогда не пела эту песню!.. Ну, может быть, и ууууууууууууупела, но не хочу, чтобы меня ассоциировали с Meat Loaf ! Несмотря на различие музыкальных вкусов (Эми имеет классическое музыкальное образование и заслушивается Tori Amos и Bjork, а Бену по душе хэви-метал 80-х), молодые люди быстро нашли общий язык. «Мы сошлись в главном — в своём отношении к музыке,  — говорит Бен.  — Мы понимаем друг друга без слов и заканчиваем мысли друг друга».
